Why Include Fragrance in Products?
Scents are more important than you might think. Newborns rely on their sense of smell more than any other sense, and research shows that products with a light scent provide benefits to babies by increasing relaxation, helping to enhance sleep, and improving parent-child bonding.i
However, not all scents are created equal. Every JOHNSON’S® fragrance is especially created for babies, based on our extensive science of baby skin, to be safe, exclude allergens and create memorable experiences.
Babies are not miniature adults; their skin is up to 30% thinner and can be more sensitive. That’s why JOHNSON’S® shampoos, washes and lotions are not repurposed adult products – they’re formulas created specifically for newborns’, baby’s and toddlers’ delicate skin. And because we believe that when it comes to choosing a product for their baby, every parent should have peace of mind, we’ve gone the extra mile to keep known fragrance allergens out. We limit ourselves to only gentle fragrance ingredients and use less than 1 out of 4 aroma compounds used in fragranced consumer products, but we think it is worth the extra effort.
Is Natural Better?
It’s a common myth that natural fragrance and essential oils are automatically better than synthetic versions. However, this is not accurate. Many natural fragrances and essential oils can contain fragrance allergens. Our body responds to a fragrance allergen in the same way if it is synthetic or natural – it can’t tell the difference.
It’s possible to combine the best parts of nature and science. At JOHNSON’S®, safety and gentleness always come first. Before we use a fragrance or essential oil, we learn what’s actually in it and then choose what’s safe and most gentle for baby; that could be a naturally-derived or synthetic fragrance.
Our Fragrances
Creating a fragrance is a science and an art. Much like musical notes that make up a song, individual fragrance ingredients are skillfully blended together to create “notes” and many notes together create the fragrance composition. Fragrance notes are organized into families by their main scent characteristics (i.e., fruity, floral, woody, etc.). Across JOHNSON’S®, the heart of our fragrances is centered around soft floral notes that are harmoniously combined with the other 10 families to create memorable experiences that parents and babies know and love.
We list our fragrance ingredients by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) dictionary and we try to use the simplest description, but often the names are words that only a chemist could love! This common language helps someone with a known fragrance allergy confirm if it is in our products or not and helps them make better decisions. That’s why we also label our fragrance allergens according to EU standards. You won’t find them as we formulate our products below the levels established by the Scientific Committee for Cosmetic Safety.
